Embracing AI and Innovation: A Keynote at Newry, Mourne and Down’s Investment Showcase
I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at an inspiring event hosted by the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. The occasion was the People, Place and Prosperity Investment Symposium, held at the stunning Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle. This showcase brought together over 100 business leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, and civic stakeholders to explore opportunities tied to multi-million-pound public and private sector investments set to transform this vibrant region.
Working with global giants like AbbVie, Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle, I was thrilled to share insights on how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries—and why businesses must embrace this transformative technology to future-proof themselves. My message focused on the immense potential of AI to drive growth, boost productivity, and navigate the complexities of our rapidly evolving digital age. For a district preparing for unprecedented economic expansion, these tools are not just advantageous; they’re essential.
The symposium opened with Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald emphasizing her department’s commitment to addressing regional disparities through strategic partnerships with councils, local organizations, and educational institutions. Her remarks set the tone for a day filled with forward-thinking discussions about leveraging Newry, Mourne and Down’s unique strengths—its geographic location, breathtaking natural beauty, highly skilled workforce, and proximity to both Belfast and Dublin—to attract investment and foster innovation.
Two panel sessions further enriched the conversation. The first explored how the region can capitalize on its assets to become a hub for enterprise. Speakers included Marie Ward, Chief Executive of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council; Laura O’Hare from Collins Aerospace; Anastasia Desmond of the Ulster University Economic Policy Centre; and David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council. Their insights painted a compelling picture of a region poised for success.
The second panel delved into the critical role of innovation, particularly cutting-edge technologies like AI, in driving sustainable growth. Steve Orr from Catalyst, Janet Burns of BT, David Quinn from Queen’s University Belfast, and Adrienne Hanna, Founder of Right Revenue, shared their perspectives on supporting businesses as they adapt to and adopt new technologies. It was heartening to see so many voices united in recognizing the importance of fostering a culture of innovation.
One of the highlights of the day came during the closing announcements. Attendees learned about two significant funding initiatives aimed at attracting private sector investment and enhancing tourism infrastructure. A £3 million Grade A Office Accommodation Grant Fund will support the development of high-quality office spaces, while a £1 million Tourism Accommodation Programme Fund will provide targeted backing for hotel projects. Both funds are expected to open later this year, signaling exciting opportunities ahead.
Cllr Pete Byrne, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, captured the spirit of the event perfectly when he spoke of the council’s dedication to creating a thriving business ecosystem. He highlighted the nearly £200 million Belfast Region City Deal investment earmarked for projects across tourism, regeneration, infrastructure, and digital innovation over the next decade. These plans promise to reshape the landscape of Newry, Mourne and Down, making it a magnet for talent and enterprise.
Marie Ward echoed this sentiment, noting the region’s strategic position along the Dublin-Belfast Economic Corridor and its existing strengths in advanced engineering, manufacturing, and the digital and creative sectors. She emphasized the need for robust infrastructure to complement these advantages and ensure the district remains competitive globally.
For me, the event reinforced the power of collaboration and vision. Hearing from passionate business owners like Adrienne Hanna and seasoned professionals like Laura O’Hare reminded me that behind every successful region are people willing to dream big and work hard to make those dreams a reality.
As I left the symposium, I couldn’t help but feel optimistic about what lies ahead for Newry, Mourne and Down. With bold leadership, innovative thinking, and strategic investments, this district is not just preparing for growth—it’s shaping a legacy of prosperity. And as an advocate for AI and technological advancement, I’m excited to see how this community leverages these tools to build a brighter future for all.
Here’s to embracing change, unlocking potential, and paving the way for progress!
